I Finally Pulled the Trigger At Gucci—Here’s What Bag I Committed to

Other Brands

If you follow us on Instagram, then you already know that a couple of weeks ago, I had a very fun Friday when I waltzed right on into Gucci on 5th Avenue, proclaimed “I’ll take that one,” swiped my debit card and walked out with a brand new baby all boxed up and ready to make her debut. If you didn’t yet see, than you may be surprised that after months and months of deliberation, I finally made up my mind and I truly couldn’t be more pleased with my purchase. The minute I got back to my apartment, I filmed a quick unboxing for our Instagram, and jammed all of my stuff right on in. From that moment on, I’ve been obsessed with my Gucci GG Marmont Matelassé Shoulder Bag.

I’ve had my bag for over two weeks now and have used it pretty much every day since—even traveling to Florida this past weekend for a wedding with her in tow. So I feel like I can give you guys a pretty accurate purseonal review. After one too many hours of thinking, I finally had my mind set on the Marmont over something from the Dionysus collection or a bag from a different designer all together. When I went into Gucci, I was deciding between getting the mini and the small, and ultimately I decided to get the small. The price difference between the mini and the small is negligible—only $190, so it makes sense, unless you’re really committed to getting a mini bag.

It’s interesting to note that the mini has recently gone up in price to $1,790 from $1,690 on Gucci’s website, though some online retailers still have it listed for $1,690. Price aside, I wanted a bag that could transition easily from day to night, and this size is totally perfect for me. I have a Gucci SoHo Disco Chain Bag from a few years ago that I’ve shown a whole lot of love to and use all the time, and so I felt the small was the best size option for me as it’s pretty comparable to my SoHo Disco.

I simply adore my new bag for so many reasons. One of the things that really drew me to it is the hardware, which is muted and matte instead of overly shiny. The matelassé leather is also understated and not overly puffy. The leather is soft and luxurious, yet pretty durable. I haven’t babied this bag at all—it’s been out all day through all hours of the night, and as I mentioned above, I even travelled with it. Even with all of the use, I haven’t seen a single scratch, which is huge. I have plenty of bags that I treasure, but wouldn’t dream of bringing along with me on a night out in NYC, but this bag isn’t one of them. Because of the quality and the color, I’m not afraid of using it, and that says a lot! There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a bag only to have it sit in your closet because you’re afraid of using it.

The functionality of this bag is also what drew me to it. I like that it can be worn over the shoulder long, doubled for a shorter strap drop or worn crossbody. With my busy lifestyle, I definitely wear this bag crossbody the most, but this weekend I wore it to a wedding and wore it over my shoulder, but not doubled and it didn’t slide off of me. I like that it has a leather area that rests on your shoulder, which not all chain bags have. Inside, I fit all of my usuals, and below is a shot of what I actually—really, it’s all my stuff!—carry day to day. At times I have a second phone in there as well for work, so this bag can actually hold a decent amount! There is one interior zip pocket, which I haven’t actually used that much, because I’ve been keeping my cosmetics in a mini case. The bag is lined in durable microfiber, but it feels like suede. Overall dimensions of the Small GG Marmont Matelassé Shoulder Bag are 10″W x 6″H x 3″D, with a shoulder strap drop of 22″, or a top handle drop of 12”. Snag one of your own via Gucci for $1,980. What do you think of my decision? Do you want one too?

DON’T BE FOOLED: GET THE RED CARPET LOOK ON A BUDGET

Whenever we have a special event coming up, it can be easy to overspend on our outfit and justify it with phrases like “Well, it’s just this once”, “it’s worth it” and “everyone’s going to be there!” Whether it’s the expectations of others or of ourselves, spending an extortionate amount of money seems to be the norm for many formal events, even if we don’t really have the funds for it. But what if we didn’t have to spend that much at all? What if the celebrity styles which cost thousands of pounds, can actually be found for under £100? Whether it’s a wedding, prom, or business event, the key to finding a beautiful garment for less is 1. To know where to look and 2. Believe that it’s out there. Celebs and high-end designers have a way of lulling us into believing we need to spend the most to get the best, but as many can attest to, this is certainly not always the case. From red carpet wardrobe mishaps to ludicrously overpriced $2,145 Ikea bag, sometimes spending less money and more time finding the right outfit is best for both you and your bank account.

EXPLORE DISCOUNT DESIGNER CLOTHING

Shopping online has many advantages, from avoiding the chaotic atmosphere of the high street to getting the best price through online promotions. However, when it comes to clothes shopping for a special occasion, some people are still keen to hit the shops to make sure they find the right fit. However, with many online stores such as ASOS now offering a “Try Before you Buy” service, you can try on your outfit as you would in store, and send it back just as easily if you don’t like it. Plus, trying outfits on in your home gives you more time to think and feel confident in your new fashion purchase.

Smart Shopping – For those looking to save on an outfit, it will come as no surprise that shopping in the sale can often land you a good discount. But another aspect to shopping online is websites such as Promo Codes For which offer money off thousands of designer stores, to save on the perfect new piece for your event. Explore designer stores such as Van Mildert with up to 70% off in the Outlet so you can get a beautiful Michael Kors Midi Dress for just £59 rather than £195. Carrying deals on thousands of brands, you can explore shops which specialise in discounts on designer clothing such as Brand Alley, Get the Label and Secret Sales.

MIX & MATCH HIGH STREET FASHION

With places such as Brand Alley, Get the Label and Secret Sales you can find big bargains on designer brands from Armani to Versace. However, whether shopping online or in store, there are also many ways to get red carpet styles without the designer label. Anyone who has read fashion magazines or celebrity culture news websites will probably be familiar with the section where they find styles which look just like celebrity outfits, and this isn’t a rarity. Many designer’s creations can be found in an almost identical (and sometimes in better) design in high street stores such as Urban Outfitters, Topshop and Zara. The physical differences are often minimal, and although the designer clothing might be better quality, with hundreds of pounds between two very similar items, it might be best to make a slight compromise, especially if it will only be worn for big events.

GET VINTAGE DISCOUNTS IN THE CHARITY SHOPS

Never underestimate your local charity shops, especially when you are looking to find a designer outfit on a budget. When we think of browsing the charity shops, people often assume that they won’t find anything luxury enough for a special occasion; and granted it could take a while to find the perfect garment for your event. However, if you have a few spare minutes in the day such as your lunch break at work or you find a little time at the weekend, you may well find some hidden gems, especially if you shop in the more affluent areas of your home town. You can even scope out the charity shops which celebrities donate tomost, and save on some outfits which may well have actually hit the red carpet. Hit the shops early on and don’t be disheartened if you don’t find what you are looking for straight away. If you don’t find an outfit for your event, you may well find some stylish accessories or a perfectly fitting pair of designer jeans for a night out on the town.

When planning for any special event, getting the perfect outfit is often top of everyone’s list. Seeing celebrities on the red carpet looking like a million dollars, makes many of us feel like a celebrity ourselves when we dress up for an occasion. It’s this desire to look and feel amazing just for this event which can spur us on to overspend when we can look incredible without spending money we don’t have. But instead of giving in to the idea that an expensive outfit is a good one, seeing how you can get exactly what you want at a discount price can be the difference between a great event tainted by later regret, and a wonderful experience with money left over to create many more unforgettable memories.

THE DOS AND DON’TS OF BEAUTY PRODUCTS AT THE AIRPORT

From sun-kissed skin to glowing tans, we all want to look our best on holiday. Whether it’s feeling confident in a swimsuit or having flawless skin for the holiday snaps, being confident in our own skin has a huge impact on how much we enjoy our break. But before jetting off, we need to be well prepared for taking our beauty essentials abroad whether it’s a tub of sunscreen or your entire makeup kit. With airport security regulations being updated regularly, its vital to know what you can and can’t bring abroad with you, what to pack where and where to get what you need. Whether it’s going duty free to save money, or preparing your lotions beforehand to save time, travelling with your beauty products has some major do’s and don’ts.

DON’T PUT GLOSSES & LOTIONS IN HAND LUGGAGE

As most people are aware, liquids can’t be taken in hand luggage unless they meet certain rules. There is sometimes confusion about what qualifies as a liquid however, especially when it comes to cosmetics and skincare as many are a thicker consistently than wouldn’t usually be considered liquids, such as liquid eyeliner and Vaseline. The Gov.uk website states that beauty products such as mascara, lipgloss, perfumes and creams cannot be taken in your hand luggage, unless in a clear, sealed plastic bag. For long haul flights this is a good solution to ensure your skin and makeup stays fresh for when you land, just ensure you follow the guidelines. Otherwise packing your makeup kit in your hold luggage is an easier option.

DO SHOP DUTY FREE

Duty free shopping is known for saving people money, and for good reason. Unlike other money saving shopping techniques such as sale shopping and going for lower quality products, duty free means you can get top quality products from big brands whilst saving money. The tax exemption on duty free products makes travelling even better, especially for those getting beauty products who can save up to 50% on designer fragrances and cosmetics. You can make the most of your savings and have more money to spend on your break by planning other areas of your holiday beforehand too. By comparing your airport parking beforehand with Parking at Airports you can save up to 72%, and booking an airport lounge means you can save on pricey snacks as food and drink is usually free. Alongside the cash you’ll save, having a stress free journey is part of the package too when you pre-book the often pricey and time consuming aspects of your trip.

DON’T FORGET THE HOLIDAY ESSENTIALS

Whether it’s a skiing holiday, beach break or business trip in a big city, this new environment is bound to have an impact on your skin. Alongside your essential holiday makeup kit and favourite fragrances, don’t forget to protect your skin against the potentially damaging weather conditions. Many essentials can be brought in your holiday destination too, with big brands such as Garnier and Nivea being available no matter where you go, saving you the hassle of getting lotions through airport security. Sunscreen is a must, with an SPF 30 or above for over 97% protection against UV rays, and for the colder locations, a nourishing moisturiser to keep your face hydrated works wonders. Once you have your skincare sorted, bear in mind the activities you plan to do on your break; going for a swim? Don’t forget the waterproof mascara. Getting active with an itinerary of physical challenges? Make sure your cosmetic collection is durable with good quality eyeliner and foundation that won’t sweat off.

DO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN BEFORE & AFTER FLYING

Whether you have dry, oily or combination skin, ensuring you look after the largest and most protective organ of your body is essential. Before your flight, use a light moisturiser and drink lots of water to keep you well hydrated. You won’t be able to take your water through airport security however, so be sure to take a bottle and drink it beforehand, filling it up again the other end. If on a long flight, it’s best to avoid wearing make-up as it can suffocate your skin and clog your pores, but if you do, make sure not to leave it on whilst sleeping and instead use a soft cleanser or facial wipe to remove it. A light water spritz can also add a breath of fresh air for your skin when in a cramped cabin. After your flight, a facial scrub can help get rid of any remaining dirt as well as refreshing your skin, topped off with a cleansing cream if you have dry skin.

Before you jet off it’s essential to plan what you need to bring to care for your skin and help you feel confident for the entirety of your journey. From your door to your destination, be aware of airport restrictions and what to pack can avoid you being stuck on a long-haul flight feeling less than fresh faced. By taking the time beforehand you can avoid last minute hassles such as finding somewhere to park, eat or relax, and lessen the chances of any stress breakouts, as well as save money. Organising what to bring and what to get via duty free can help you save money even after your holiday, and don’t forget to pack for the break itself to avoid getting caught out when it matters most. Take care of your skin, prepare for your beauty regime and get ready to enjoy a well-deserved holiday.
